NANAÉ SUZUKI

Like a Fish in Water / Wie ein Fisch im Wasser 2013
Watercolor, 24 x 32 cm

A Bird in the Hand / Reconciliation / Grappling / Back-to-Back / Scuffling

I used scene stills from feature films and documentaries as source material. Double images of figures are created through two different viewpoints.

In this new series of watercolours Nanaé Suzuki regards her subject through a glass cylinder filled with water as if gazing at fish in a bowl. Adopting this focus when looking at photographs she transfers the distortions and the doubling to her paintings. Depicted are simple gestures made by people: Talking, attacking each other, turning one's back or playing the violin. But through her special lens the figures appear absurd, ironic, agressive and/or funny. (Michael Behn)
